Health Talks With Dr. Hogan
Osteoarthritis is a very common condition that results in pain to the affected joint. It is due to a loss of articular cartilage. This is the cartilage attached to the end of the bones and acts as a buffer pad and is lubricated from the capsule of the joint. (the bag within which the joint is enclosed). This kind of arthritis can be the result of Trauma, infection or general wear and tear of age. For a detailed discussion please make an appointment with Dr. Hogan 770-456-5817 for a definitive diagnosis and to discuss treatment options.
Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when the median nerve is unduly compressed in the carpal tunnel compartment of the wrist. The median nerve gives sensation in most people to the thumb, the index finger, the long finger and half of the ring finger. The symptoms start in most people as aching and tingling to the fingers that tends to be worse at night and when driving. This is situation where compression and inflammation both contribute to the clinical problem. Call 770-456-5817 for an appointment to discuss the diagnosis and treatment options.
Arthroscopic surgery can be part of the treatment for most joints. The most common joint for which it is used is the knee. Some people call this type of surgery keyhole surgery as the procedure is done through very small keyhole type incisions.A scope is placed in the joint attached to a camera. The surgeon can view the inside of the joint by watching a TV screen. This procedure allows your surgeon to examine areas that are hidden from view and to repair or remove problem lesions. Call 770-456-5817 for an appointment to discuss if your problem is a candidate for this minimally invasive procedure.
In our practice we are using an innovative new knee that is made to fit you as an individual. The latest technology of 3-D printing and computer engineering are used to make a replacement knee that will fit you perfectly. This new procedure is state of the art surgical intervention and allows for a replacement to be done with minimal bone removal. The end result is a faster recovery and an overnight or no hospital stay. Call 770-456-5817 for an appointment for a second opinion or to discuss your knee pain.
The meniscus is a strong rubbery cartilage that sits between the two bones of a joint and protects the surface cartilage from injury. In the knee there are two meniscal structures which can be torn with sports or just everyday activity. They are a very important structure and are integral to normal knee function. When they are torn or damaged they can be repaired or trimmed by arthroscopic techniques. A torn meniscus however will accelerate knee damage and result in osteoarthritis if it is not addressed. This is a very complex condition and requires that you discuss this with your orthopaedic surgeon. For a second opinion or for a diagnosis call 770-456-5817 for an appointment.
When a bone is broken (a fracture) it needs to be treated by an expert in this field. It is wise to have an orthopaedic surgeon evaluate and manage your care. Bones are wonderful active biological structures that have great potential to heal and make you 100% better. However rotation is nor acceptable and leads to functional limitations. The broken bone needs to be held in place while it heals and there are several methods to accomplish this. Be well informed before you accept definitive care. For an appointment call 770-456-5817.
